Brivo Mobile Pass app opens Internet of Things doors – literally

Brivo Mobile Pass is a smartphone application that lets users unlock doors using their smartphones. It’s part of the Internet of Things(IoT) company’s existing Brivo OnAir access control system.

There are 6 million people who use the Brivo’s access control system across 100,000 access points, but they won’t all be waving smartphones right away to open sesame the doors.

Brivo is encouraging its customers who are already using pass keys & other technologies on the Brivo OnAir access control system to switch over to the Mobile Pass system. The platform already provides administrators full accessibility to manage their system from a smartphone. With Brivo Mobile Pass, all their users can open doors using their smartphone.

Customers who switch over can purchase Mobile pass access in 100-user packs, which means they will be paying a fee for each user who makes use of it. Steve Van Till, CEO of Brivo, said that “we are giving all of our customers five free Brivo Mobile Passes so that they can use it immediately.”

So exactly how does the Mobile Pass work? It’s a Cloud-based mobile credential system that has been added as an enhancement to the Brivo OnAir platform. The Brivo OnAir administrator selects a user and creates a Brivo Mobile Pass invitation that is delivered via email.

The user simply has to click the “Add” button in the email to activate Brivo Mobile Pass on their phone. They can then open doors as they would have with a keycard. The application communicates with the cloud using the smartphone’s capabilities and requests that the door be opened. The same application is able to control doors in multiple Brivo OnAir accounts.

Brivo claims the Mobile Pass is far more secure because of the Cloud-based authentication, and it is protected by passcode &  biometric capabilities built into the smartphone. Besides, administrators can always revoke a specific Mobile Pass at any time. “Naturally, we’ve invested a lot in encryption and cyber security for this new service,” said Van Till, in a statement.

The application, which is available on both Google Play & the App Store, is currently being implemented only on the commercial and enterprise premises of Brivo customers that include offices, gyms & parking garages. But it could just as easily be made available for home users who want a secure and convenient way to open doors in smart homes and make it a part of their IoT appliances controlled by their smartphone.

Bethesda, MD-based Brivo Inc. was founded in 1999, & is now a worldwide leader of Cloud-based physical access control systems. The company was acquired in June 2015 for US $50 million by Eagle Eye Networks CEO Dean Drako, who is now Brivo’s Chairman.
