Quantifying RoI a challenge in adoption of IoT: Survey

A large chunk of companies out there believe that quantifying the Return on Investment (ROI) and providing a clear use case were the most immediate challenges in adopting the Internet of Things (IoT).

A survey by the United Kingdom-based Canonical Ltd, the firm behind open-end Ubuntu, said at least 53 per cent of those surveyed belonged to this group. 75 per cent were prioritising Big Data and analytics expertise in their hiring decisions, stating that having these skills is critical for any candidate to be considered an IoT expert. Overall, the survey found, 68 per cent of vendors developing IoT solutions are struggling to find and recruit employees with relevant IoT expertise.

Additional skill sets in demand today included embedded software development (33 pc), embedded electronics (32 pc), expertise in IT security (31 pc) and an understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (30 pc). 57 per cent of IoT professionals supported the standardisation of IoT platforms as a means of ensuring better IoT security, the report stated.

With a current market valuation of US $900 bn , the potential for IoT was huge but many businesses were still grappling with how it could benefit their organisations, and how exactly to get started. The Canonical survey quizzed over 360 IoT professionals to examine their current and future challenges plus opportunities that exist for organisations looking to become IoT ready.

The report looked at three key elements that businesses need to consider including how they can monetise the internet of things in the long term, what skills they need and where to find them and finally, how to address fundamental security considerations.
