GE launches Cloud service for industrial IoT apps

GE industrial IoTWell-known maker of aircraft engines and wind turbines, to name a few products, GE has launched a Cloud service based on its industrial equipment monitoring and analytics platform, Predix. The service aims at industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications in many of the verticals in GE’s backyard – aviation, manufacturing, automotive, among others.

The Cloud service will monitor and analyse data generated by the IoT sensors embedded in industrial equipment. At present, the big players in the IaaS market are Amazon Web Services followed by Microsoft, Google and IBM. GE joins this list but its USP lies in offering infrastructure services specifically for industrial customers.

As is known, GE manufactures equipment like jet engines and locomotives. Predix was developed initially as a Platform as a Service for customers and developers to build apps. Now, GE will also be providing infrastructure services to run those applications.

The service includes a variety of tools to help customers manage security, compliance and data governance, which can be operated seamlessly with other services running in on a broad range of Cloud platforms.

It was in July only that GE had announced it was partnering with Pitney Bowes to develop a custom asset performance management application that would analyse the data Pitney generated from its machines.
