Intel bullish on IoT in Asia, announces new projects, expands IoT Gateway for developers

Taipei, June 3, 2015: Fresh from its recent announcement of acquiring chipmaker Altera, Intel Corp. today announced five new Internet of Things (IoT) pilot projects and other developments with its Taiwanese partners.

According to reports coming in from the ongoing COMPUTEX TAIPEI trade show, the world’s largest chip maker hosted an IoT-themed press conference to announce its future plans to make IoT a reality in Asia, including India, and in other parts of the world. Intel had two days ago announced its intent of acquire programmable chipmaker Altera for US $16.7 billion. This was Intel’s largest acquisition ever.

At today’s presser, Jason Chen, Vice President, Intel Sales and Marketing Group, and Country Manager, Intel, Taiwan said the IoT was a fast-growing market that presented “tremendous opportunities for Intel.”  The IoT apps featured at the press event were developed jointly with Intel’s partners in Taiwan for buildings, cities, factories, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, agriculture, education and home solutions.

Earlier, in a statement, Intel introduced the expansion of the Intel IoT Gateway product family to give developers and the ecosystem the flexibility to create and deploy innovative, cost-effective IoT solutions for a range of diverse market segments including smart cities, smart manufacturing, smart retail, smart transportation, and smart buildings. The latest version offered expanded choice in silicon, software and services to enable solutions to scale in performance and get to market more quickly.

The IoT industry was expected to be a multitrillion-dollar global industry with an install base of 50 billion things in the market by the end of 2020.

inteltioecoIntel IoT Gateways provided a reference design that enabled seamless and secure data flow between edge devices and the Cloud, simplifying the process of connecting both legacy and new systems.

The newest Intel IoT Gateway reference designs offered expanded choice in silicon, software and services, enabling solutions to scale in performance and get to market more quickly.

Microsoft-based Intel IoT Gateways will align with Windows 10 IoT Core and Industry launch in the second half of 2015. As part of this effort, Intel and Microsoft were said to be working closely to enable Windows 10 IoT on the existing Intel Atom-based Gateways currently available in the market today.

The new Intel IoT Gateways also offered enhanced manageability features, including Over-the-Air OS updates and rollback, to application-ready Intel IoT Gateways. There were currently 22 unique Intel IoT Gateway designs available from 20 Intel partner companies across industries.
